Location: Stations--Forest Stations--He Shan Heshan Hilly Land Integrated Experimental Station, Chinese Academy of Sciences
Overview
Heshan Hilly Land Integrated Experimental Station is a long-term ecological research station administrated by South China Institute of Botany(SCIB), the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). It is also a core station of Chinese Ecosystem Research Network (CERN) and a CAS station open domestically and internationally.
Heshan Station is located in Heshan City in the central part of Guangdong Province and 80 kilometer southeastern away from Guangzhou City, E 112?4¢, N 22?1¢. On averagel the station is 80 m above sea level. Several man-made forests dominate the hilly lands within the station mainly with the species of Acacia mangium, Acacia auriculaeformis, Ormosia pinnata, Pinus massonia, and Pinus elliotii, etc.
The soil type is laterite and the dominant climate is lower subtropical monsoon. In 1984 SCIB in cooperation with City Government of Heshan established the Heshan Station by extending successful research experience on vegetation restoration in Xiaoliang Tropical Forest Ecosystem Station that is 400 km away in southern Guangdong. And SCIB, together with Heshan Forestry Research Institute, conducted studies on reconstruction and utilization on the abandoned subtropical hilly lands in Heshan. The purpose is to set up demonstration models of comprehensive utilization and exploitation on such hilly lands that can ensure sustainable and concerted development both ecologically and economically. Studies on the relationship between species diversity and stability, structure and function in man-made forest ecosystem have been carried out.
Based on the Heshan Station comparative ecological research has been conducted among different zones, regions and forest types in comparison with the Xiaoliang Station and Dinghushan Station. Research on restoration of tropical and subtropical degraded ecosystems and on the construction optimized man-made ecosystem is expected to be deepened in order to convert Heshan Station into a well-managed research center for resource exploitation, ecological environmental protection on tropical and lower subtropical hilly region that dominated laterite.
