Location: Stations--Agricultural Stations--Shen Yang Introduction to Shenyang Experimental Station
1. Name of station: Shenyang Experimental Station of Ecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences
2. History:
An ecological experimental station was proposed to be established in Shenyang in 1985, and the station was completed and put into operation in the spring of 1990. It was selected as one of the key stations of CERN in May, 1992, and as one of the field open stations of CAS in November, 1997.
3. Natural conditions:
The Station is located at Shilihe village of Sujiatun district, 35 km from southern Shenyang (41?22N, 123?32E), with an average elevation of 31 m. Rice, corn, soybean and vegetables are the main crops in this region, meadow brown soil is the main soil type for agricultural production. The mean annual temperature of 7.0~8.0 (max. 39.3 , min. ?C33.1 ), the annual precipitation is about 700 mm, and the frost-free period is 147~164 days.
Geographically, the Station is located at the intersection of the two transects driven by hydrologic factors from east to west and by thermic factors from north to south, exhibiting a good regional representative and an academic significance of ecosystem network research.
The urban communities surrounding the Station constitute one of the booming centers of heavy and township industries. As one of the important bases for grain production, high agricultural input and heavy industrial pollution lead to a series of eco-environmental problems, which should be embarrassed for the sustainable development of agriculture.
4. Long-term objectives: In accordance with the biogeographical characteristics of the Song-Liao Plain and its needs for industrial and agricultural production and ecological construction, and based on the advances in the research of applied ecology both at home and abroad, the Station specializes in the studies on the structure and function of main agroecosystems, the key ecological processes, their mechanisms and regulations, as well as the ecological effects of pollutants and their migration, in the aims of rational use of resources, promotion of sustainable development of agriculture, and development of agroecology and pollution ecology.
5. Tasks:
(1) Soil enzymology and the development of slow-release, controlled-release fertilizers;
(2)soil environments and remediation of the polluted soils;
(3) nutrient cycling and control of agroecosystems;
(4)agroecosystem health and the development of green food; x microbial resources and agricultural biotechnology; y long-term observation and monitoring on the changes of environmental quality and the succession of ecosystems; z demonstration and popularization of related research results.
6. Datasets:
Historic Manual, Documental Collection, and Research Collection of Shenyang Ecological Experimental Station finished in 1996 and 2000. The observational datasets of the Station are preparing, these datasets include background, meteorological, specialized publication, scientific research projects and achievement documents.
7. On-going research projectst:
Development of New-type high-efficiency Fertilizers and Their Industrialization u Characteristics of weed community and its ecological management in no-till farmlands v Soil survival characteristics of transgenic Bt crops toxin and its relationships with soil biological activities w Contribution of soil organic nitrogen to nitrate pollution of underground wastes x Utilization of recycled nutrients in agroecosystems y Kinetic characteristics and mechanism of soil enzymes catalysis and its regulation z Basic and application research of environment friendly new fertilizer and its field test
8. Achievements of research: t A new nitiogenoue gentiliger C- development of durably eggicacione ammonium bicarbonate and its utilization, Science and Technology Progress Award of People s Republic of China (1998) u Land treatment system C The innovative/alternative technology for municipal wastewater treatment, Science and Technology Progress Award of People s Republic of China (1999) 9.
