Introduction to Sanya Station, Chinese Academy of Sciences

Tropical Marine Ecosystem Research Station in Hainan, Chinese Academy of Sciences (TMERS), was founded in 1979 at Sanya, Hainan province. It is the only biological research station near tropical sea areas in China. TMERS is one of the National Key Research Stations and Ecological Stations of Chinese Ecosystem Research Network (CERN). There are 28 researchers in the station, including 6 professors and 8 associate professors. It covers a total area of about 14.7 hectares, including 7000 sq. m. of artificial seawater culture area. Publications of TMERS include 48 papers and 3 books and theses from 1996 to 2001. So far, 16 projects have been accomplished, 11 of which won prizes, and 7 patents were issued by State Intellectual Property Office. Currently 13 projects are in progress, 3 of which are international cooperative programs. With the cooperation of Hong Kong Science & Technology University, the station built up the Comprehensive Laboratory of Marine Science at Sanya for the research and development of tropical marine biology. It also makes contribution to local economy with pearl and spirulina production, and marine biological resource utilization, etc.

Research Area

l Long-term monitoring and data management of primary environmental factors, biological communities, ecological processes; researches and demonstration of structure function and dynamical character of tropical coastal ecosystems.

l Technological studies on experimental biology and sustainable use of biological resources. the station is going to become a comprehensive national experimental station and will provide technical platform for national experimental research in tropical marine ecosystem. Mission l Studies of tropical coastal ecosystem, focused on the dynamical process of coral and mangrove ecosystem and demonstration of sustainable development

l Technological researches and development on sustainable utilization of tropical marine biological resources, including experimental biology, mariculture biology and active compounds of tropical marine organism.

Major Facilities

The station is equipped with QUANPA Water Quality Analyzer and other conventional instruments for marine ecosystem monitoring, and analytical instruments for marine ecology and marine environmental chemistry, such as DU640 Nucleic Acid and Protein Analyzer,, gas chromatograph system etc.
