Introduction

Location:

Stations--Marine Stations--Jiaozhou Bay Subordinate to the Institute of Oceanlogy of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Jiaozhou Bay Marine Ecosystem Research Station( JBMERS) is located at the west bank of Yellow Sea and southern Shandong Peninsular, with an area of 390 km2. It is a typical middle-sized, semi-closed bay with favorable natural conditions, abundant biological species and high productivity of waters, representing the temperate marine ecosystem along the west bank of Northern Pacific Ocean.

The station was established in 1978, mainly engaging in the experiment and demonstration of marine cultivation. It became a positioning station of CERN in 1991, and has been an integrated research station of marine ecology involved in monitoring, research and demonstration. It has 24 research staff, including 14 full-time researchers, and formed a high-qualified research team composed of both elder and younger specialists.

The research orientations of the station are: (1) long term, location-fixed, and comprehensive monitoring of the Jiaozhou Bay ecosystem; (2) study of the structure and function of Jiaozhou Bay ecosystem; (3) study on the sustainable development of the complex ecosystem of Jiaozhou Bay; (4) optimal technical demonstration of marine cultivation; (5) marine microorganism ecology; (6) marine ecological processes concerning global change. During the Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Five-Year State Plan, the station achieved rich results in the aspects of Jiaozhou Bay investigation and dissemination of cultivation demonstration. Among the multifarious honors are 4 national, provincial and CAS awards. Two monographs and more than 200 papers were published. In recent years, important progresses have been achieved on nutrient dynamics, primary productivity, new productivity, autotrophic microorganism__protococcus viridis, and global change related ecological processes.
