Research Achievements Since its foundation, the station has conducted many research projects supported by State Science and Technology Commission, State Planning Commission, Ministry of Forestry, National Science Foundation Commission and Inner Mongolia Science and Technology Commission. Based on the researches, some breakthroughs have been achieved in elucidating the characteristics of fragile eco-environment, revealing the processes and mechanism of desertification, and assessing the carrying capacity of sandy land. Therefore, these studies have provided new insights into the theories and methods of development of natural resources and desertification control. Meanwhile, a set of scientific ideas, corresponding techniques and models have been summarized and proposed for the local socio-economic development, and greatly promoted agricultural development and desertification control. Till now, a monograph, two symposia, about 200 papers, and a Manual of Integrated Desertification Control Techniques, have been published. The projects, the Integrated Management of Desertified Land in Naiman and the Research on Techniques for High-benefit Economic Forest in Sandy Land, have won the Third-classPrize issued by Chinese Academy of Sciences. After ten year of research and comprehensive management, the drifting sand area has been reduced from 1000 to 170 ha. in a demonstrative hamlet of 1300ha.; The grain yield has been increased from 675 to 5130 kg/ha. The annual per-capita income has been increased from 174 to 1290 yuan. The accumulated income of local farmers has reached several ten million yuan due to application of the research achievements over an area of 100,000 ha. Cooperation and Personnel Training Over the past decade, researchers of the station together with Swedish and Japanese scholars have carried out joint researches in dynamics of sandy land vegetation, mechanism of land desertification in semi-arid area, and monitoring on desertification. And about 60 researchers from U. S. A, Belgium, Germany and other countries and U.N. organizations have visited the station for scientific exchanges. Many other Chinese researchers have also carried out cooperative research in the station. Fourteen staff members of the station have taken part in international symposia and short-term training courses or workshops. Three of the staffs are studying for Ph.D, and other two got M.Sci. of Agro-ecology in Sweden in 1992. The scientists and scholars in the related subject from home and abroad are warmly welcome to the station to do joint researches aiming at combating desertification that is one of major global environmental issues.
