The “Talent Project” subjected “Ecology of forest interface” was started in 1997 as part of knowledge innovation system. Ecology of interface, a new branch of ecology, was firstly put forwarded by professor Ma Shijun in 1995. But the concept of interface of ecology had been unclear and the theory, approaches and experimentation methods were still in grown up. On the other hand, It was recognized that the studies on ecology of interface were important in maintaining stability and resuming and reconstruction of ecosystem.

Advances in ecology of forest interface: (A) Broaden the objects: The meaning of ecological interface was spaces at the different matter phase where the gradient of substance is occurred. In a simple word, it is double-direction boundary layer described by substance gradient. The gradient is also the reflection on dynamics of matter-transfer process, which is the combined interaction of living matter and environment. (B) Putting forward the model of ecological composition forces The physical field of CO2 and water vapor were resulted from the coupling of ecosystem and environment The structure and ecological process were analyzed based on the calculation of information entropy of profiles of CO2 and water vapor. (C) Establishing the experiment method of describing the process at interface The system of muti-parameter collection and data processing in forest ecosystem was constructed and used for the Key project of knowledge innovation of CAS. (D) establishing long-term observation site of enriching CO2 for trees in field in Changbai Mountain. CO2 was controlled by OTCs with concentrations of 500 and 700ppm. There were top-opened box and open contrast. Tree species were pinus sylvesfriformis, pinus koraiensis, fraxinus. CO2 was enriched from seeding and during growing seasons from 1999.
